For the Canon challenge I want to submit one of my macro shots made with my simple, but effective Canon PowerShot A700. You’re allowed to submit exactly one photo, so which one should I try? Post your comments!

Definitely the 4th shot: Spider dangling upside down. It would fit in the Macro category, and unlike the other shots it’s a bit unusual. Not just a close up of an animal in its commonly observed pose, but actively at work. Most people will observe a spider sitting in the middle of a web, or quickly scuttling away. This one looks like it’s unaware of the observer and is carrying on with its difficult task of surviving in positions that humans never could. The Depth of Field in this particular one is also very well done, because it focuses on just the things that matter: the tip of the leaf, the spider and the very few threads. Everything else is well blurred background that makes your eye automatically draw towards the spider, making you wonder “wow… how does it do that!?”, and thus start looking closer to all the details captured.
Not to scrutinise the other shots, but however beautiful they might be, the composition and subject are they way anybody would see them in everyday life. The trick of good photography is to show that other point of view, and that’s what the 4th one does really well.
The only ‘problem’ is that the spider is centered in the picture, which makes it less interesting than when it would be a bit more in the top left, with the 2 threads running all the way in a blur out of the bottom right. A slight crop might do the trick, but be careful with that because you don’t want to loose too much ‘story telling’ detail.
