For the sixth time we went to Essen to visit the biggest boardgame fair of the world, Spiel ‘08. We were there for two days, saw lots of new and old, cheap and expensive, and interesting and boring games. Played some there, and bought quite some to take home with us. Here are some photos.

Our cat Tara really likes boardgames… or maybe just the attention that goes with it. No empty box is save, no moved piece stays where it is, as long as Tara plays along. Of course, getting a tile of Carcassonne out of the sack is the most dangerous part; he guards the bag with his life…

We are back from our yearly visit to Spiel 2007 in Essen (the biggest boardgame fair in the world). We went thursday and friday, and have seen most, if not everything, on the fair floors.

Of course we brought way too much back with us, so we’ll be busy playing new games (and finding a place for them in the cupboards). Behold our haul:

Voor sommigen misschien wat vroeg maar ik ben al weer een tijdje bezig met Spiel, DE bordspellenbeurs in oktober in Essen. Hoe kan je daar mee bezig zijn? Ten eerste natuurlijk 2 dagen vrij nemen en een hotel regelen voor donderdag op vrijdag. Dat zijn hopelijk weer de rustigste dagen, zaterdag en zondag zijn veel te druk!

Verder hou ik al een tijdje op boardgamegeek de Essen 2007 Canonical List in de gaten. Hier worden zoveel mogelijk nieuwe releases voor Essen bijgehouden. Alles wat hierbij interessant lijkt komt op mijn wishlist. Deze raakt aardig gevuld maar vooral omdat ik er ook spellen op zet die ik even wil onthouden maar niet direct echt wil kopen.

Verder is er op boardgamegeek nog veel meer info te vinden over de nieuwe spellen en zijn er ook genoeg externe links te vinden voor als ik nog meer wil weten…

Binnenkort maar eens een serieus “dit-is-wat-ik-wil-kopen-en-of-proberen-op-Essen”-lijstje maken.

What is the first thing you think of when you think about moving? The new house of course. I’m moving in with my boyfriend, so that’s taken care of. But then the more important question rises: What about my games?

A little background could be helpful here. Last year I bought a very nice beautiful (I know I embellish) Besta (Ikea calls it a shelf unit). I really bought it for my games, the great thing about it is, is that it’s deep enough (40cm) for most games (of course Gemblo won’t fit anywhere )

So back to the moving situation, the first thing I wanted to move was: my games and the Besta, to put them in. It took 3 trips to move all the games and the Besta in the back of the car. I didn’t have any moving-boxes, so we made piles of similar sized games and put strings around them.

We rearranged the whole living-room (3 times) to come up with a nice place for the Besta, a couch didn’t survive this, but finally it was perfect.

Then started the fun part (after Eerko put up the Besta ), selecting which games could stay downstairs, which games should be put upstairs and what games we had double now. Of course I know exactly what games I have and what games Eerko has, but to see that sad pile of games (Durch die Wüste, Einfach Genial, TransAmerica, Blokus, a couple of tichu’s and Franks Zoo’s… and more!) it seemed like a lot more then I thought up front.

(ok, just one question in between, how sad is it, that we switched Carcasonne box-lids? I had most expansions, so my game stays downstairs, but it’s a Dutch version and the other CC game boxes are german and Eerko also has a german box?)

Putting everything in the Besta was the most fun, all our games together, moving the shelves up and down when needed. All the small games where put into nice boxes, so we can get them out easy but it doesn’t seem so cluttered.

So now the important things are done, now it’s time to get started with moving the rest of my stuff!

Stel je voor, het is koninginnedag, mooi weer en 12.00 uur… Wat ga je doen? Nou net als driekwart van de Nederlanders ga je naar de rommelmarkt (de andere kwart is daar al, met zijn/haar hele hebben en houden in de aanbieding).

In het zonnetje liepen we een kwartiertje later de fietsenstalling (de Graaff, nu wel helemaal vol!) uit en de rommelmarkt op. Bij gebrek aan een betere strategie zijn we een willekeurige straat ingelopen. Met rechts aanhouden, ook bij zijstraten en bij het einde van de straat / kraampjes rechtsomkeerd denk ik dat we toch wel redelijk bij bijna alle kraampjes langsgelopen zijn.

Als spelletjes-gek was ik natuurlijk vooral op zoek naar, jawel, bordspelletjes.

Als eerste viel mijn oog echter op een spel wat eigenlijk meer een puzzel is: Rush hour S.O.S. Team.
Het doosje zag er een beetje gammel uit en ik wilde controleren of het wel compleet was, maar voor 50 cent heb ik ‘m maar gewoon meegenomen (en thuis bleek het ook helemaal compleet te zijn!).

Al helemaal happy met deze aankoop zag ik even later onder een stapel andere spellen (Enschede Business game iemand?) een spel waar ik al heel lang naar uit kijk: Twixt. Ik ben dol op verbindingsspellen en dit is in dit genre een klassieker. Voor een euro was ik een grote doos vol met losse stukjes en loszittende deksel rijker (mental note: toch maar een grotere plastic tas meenemen volgend jaar).

Na wat geprop in een eigenlijk te klein tasje was Twixt veilig opgeborgen en konden we de zoektocht voort zetten.

Niet veel later zag ik Foute Vrienden Vette Feesten liggen. Ik heb dit spel al (in het Duits Fiese Freunde Fette Feten) maar je weet nooit wat ze er op een rommelmarkt voor vragen, voor een paar euro is het een mooi cadeau ofzo. Ook dit spel bleek een euro te kosten en het was nog nooit gespeeld, de helft van de inhoud zat nog in het plastic. De andere helft jammergenoeg niet en die rolde vrolijk door de doos, waarvan ook de deksel weigerde goed dicht te blijven (mental note: volgend jaar elastiekjes meenemen).

Aan het laatste spel heb ik mijn speluitgaven meer als verdubbeld. Voor het spel Kula Kula heb ik wel 3 euro betaald! Dit spel trekt vooral de aandacht omdat het erg mooi uitgevoerd is. Het heeft niet voor niets een prijs voor het mooiste spel (1993) gewonnen.
(Hoe cool zijn echte schelpjes, mooie bootjes en een dolfijn-spinner?)

Na een aantal uur te hebben rondgelopen waren we de drukte wel weer zat. We zijn nog even terug gelopen naar de posterverkoop naast het muziekcentrum. Eerko heeft daar een mooie groene, glimmende poster van the Matrix gekocht.

Met nieuwe lootjes van de fietsenstalling (we gaan voor een tandem) zijn we bepakt en bezakt naar huis gegaan .
